Recycling & Responsible Disposal Guide

At tinker.garden, we are committed to environmental sustainability and minimizing our ecological footprint. To help address the global challenge of plastic waste, our primary product components are manufactured using Polylactic Acid (PLA)—a bio-based, compostable bioplastic.

To help us close the loop, please follow these guidelines to responsibly dispose of or recycle your tinker.garden products at the end of their lifecycle.

Understanding PLA (Polylactic Acid)

PLA is derived from renewable resources like cornstarch, making it a much more sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics. However, because of its unique properties, it must be processed differently at the end of its life:

  • Industrial Composting Required: While PLA is biodegradable, it is highly durable under normal household conditions and will not break down in a standard backyard compost bin. To initiate biodegradation, it requires the controlled, high-temperature environments (minimum of 60°C/140°F) found in industrial composting facilities. In these specialized facilities, PLA is shredded and typically degrades fully within 1 to 3 months.
  • Keep Out of Standard Recycling Bins: Please do not place PLA components into your household co-mingled recycling bin. Because PLA has a lower melting point than traditional plastics (like PET or HDPE), it can contaminate and disrupt municipal plastic recycling streams.

How to Dispose of Your tinker.garden Products

To ensure your product is processed correctly, please separate its components and use one of the following disposal methods:

1. PLA Components (Main Body/Structure)

  • Option A (Preferred): Industrial Composting. Bring these components to a commercial composting facility or a specialized bioplastics collection point in your local area. Many municipal councils or waste management centers now accept PLA; we recommend checking your local government's waste directory for commercial organic waste processing.
  • Option B: General/Residual Waste. If a specialized facility is not available in your region, dispose of the PLA components in your landfill (residual waste) bin. Because PLA is bio-based, its lifecycle carbon footprint remains lower than traditional plastics, even when sent to landfill.

2. Non-PLA Components (Connector Pins & Transparent Sheets)

  • Standard Plastic Recycling: The connector pins and transparent plastic sheets are manufactured from standard technical plastics. These should be separated from the PLA body and placed in your standard household recycling bin, or recycled in accordance with your local hard-plastic recycling guidelines.
